The Umani Ronchi Vigor Sangiovese Merlot 2020 is a captivating blend that marries the robustness of Sangiovese with the softness of Merlot. Originating from the Marche hills, where the Apennine Mountains meet the Adriatic Sea, this wine is a true expression of its terroir. Comprising 75% Sangiovese and 25% Merlot, the vineyards are situated at an elevation of 150 meters above sea level, with a southeast exposure. The soil, rich in calcareous clay loam, traces its origins back to marine formations from the Pleiocene-Pleistocene era. With yields averaging between five to six tons per hectare, the grapes are hand-harvested, starting with Merlot in early September and concluding with Sangiovese by the month’s end.
The winemaking process is meticulous, beginning with destemming and soft pressing. The must then ferments in steel tanks at temperatures between 26-28°C for 10 to 12 days. Following alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine moves on to the aging process. The Merlot is aged for about 8 months in small oak barrels that have been used three or four times, while the Sangiovese ages in stainless steel vats. After blending, Vigor rests in the bottle for an additional 6 months, allowing the flavors to integrate and the wine to reach its full potential.
